How big are the expert mazes?

Expert is the largest size of each shape. The numbers are averages over 30 generated mazes per shape. Expect 15 to 25 minutes for one maze, more on a first try.

Answer route: cells on the one correct path. Hard, one level down, has about 55 to 65% of these cells.

What makes a maze hard

Length. In an expert rectangle the correct route runs through about a third of all 1,260 cells, so even a solver who never takes a wrong turn draws a long line.

Long false trails. These mazes have no loops, so you cannot go round in circles. The difficulty comes from branches that run a long way before they dead-end, often right next to the correct corridor.

Choices per step. In a hexagon maze a cell has up to six neighbours and junctions can branch three ways, so it feels harder than its 547 cells suggest. Triangle mazes zig-zag, which makes the route hard to scan by eye.

Small corridors. Expert cells are small on paper. Use a sharp pencil or a fine pen, and print at 100% scale. The solving methods on the main page, especially filling in dead ends, help when looking ahead stops working.

Make a maze booklet

  1. Pick a shape, or keep Rectangle for the longest routes.
  2. Set Mazes to 12 and Mazes per page to 1, so every maze fills a page.
  3. Leave Answer keys on All at the end. Twelve puzzles then give a 15-page PDF: 12 puzzle pages and 3 key pages with four answers each.
  4. Give it a title, for example Lunch-break mazes, and download the PDF. The seed is printed in each footer, so you can recreate any page later.

For a second booklet, change the seed or the shape. The same seed in a different shape gives a completely different maze.

Large print

For larger, easier-to-see corridors, step down to Hard and turn on Bold walls. One maze per page keeps the corridors as wide as possible.

Mazes for adults FAQ

How hard is the Expert level?

An expert rectangle has 1,260 cells and an answer route of about 430 cells. Most adults need 15 to 25 minutes for one, longer when they are new to mazes.

Which shape is the hardest?

For sheer length, the rectangle, which has the most cells and the longest route. For the most decisions per step, the hexagon, where junctions branch three ways.

Can I print a whole booklet of mazes?

Yes. Make up to 12 different mazes in one batch, one per page, with all answer keys at the end. Download PDF saves them as one file.

Are the answers included?

Yes. Each maze has a matching answer key with the route drawn in red. Choose all at the end, after each page or none.

Will the small corridors print clearly?

Yes, if you print at 100% scale. The PDF is vector, so walls stay sharp on any printer. Bold walls make them heavier if your printer is faint.

Are there easier mazes for large print?

Step down to the Hard level and turn on Bold walls. The corridors get wider and the lines heavier while the maze stays challenging.

Does this need an account?

No. Mazes are generated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

Can I use these mazes commercially?

Yes. The mazes and answer keys you generate are yours to use for any purpose, including commercial use: print and photocopy them for classes and clubs, hand them out, or include them in workbooks and puzzle books you sell. No attribution or permission is needed. This covers the mazes you make, not the text and code of this website.
